It all started with a conversation between two friends. My friend Hannah came to me with an idea - a storytelling show featuring stories from fat people about the fat experience. What Hannah didn’t know is that I used to run storytelling nights and stand-up events in my past life (before advertising).
So we booked a venue. We named it The Fat Narrative Project and our first show sold out within 24 hours. The demand wasn’t just for tickets - it was for connection, community and visibility. Fat folks showed up in force and they kept showing up —every show since has sold out. The stage became a kind of sanctuary - part comedy (I’m the emcee) and part group therapy.
That’s when Hannah said, “There’s a need for a fat community. What if we built something bigger?”
So we did. We created a nonprofit called Authentically Fat that centers the fat experience. A space where fat people can be seen, heard and celebrated. Through storytelling, education and peer validation. We’re creating the community we always needed as fat kids, but could never find.
